About Intraplex®

Intraplex® was specially developed to remove particularly persistent pollutants such as PFAS (also known as “perpetual chemicals”) from soil and groundwater. It helps to safely bind these toxic compounds and render them harmless in the long term.

Intraplex® enables the installation of highly efficient PFAS adsorption barriers within a few days, with up to 98% pollutant reduction and an adsorption life of the barrier of several decades. The costs for this can be up to 70% below the costs of conventional pump & treat systems.

Intraplex® Activated Carbon for PFAS Remediation

PFAS remediation places the highest demands on the in situ materials. With the Intraplex® activated carbon, Intrapore offers a colloidally stabilized suspension that is injected directly into the contaminated aquifer.

Intraplex® – The Best Activated Carbon for PFAS Removal

PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” are highly persistent pollutants that contaminate soil and groundwater for decades. Intraplex® is a specially engineered activated carbon that not only captures PFAS but does so with unmatched efficiency.

The activated carbon in the suspension was optimized for PFAS adsorption via dedicated R&D projects. It has an extremely high surface area that has been specially conditioned for PFAS adsorption. The material has been successfully used in large-scale field applications and has been approved by the authorities under local water regulations.

Application Example:
international airport

At the international airport, a pilot test adsorption barrier was injected across a highly PFAS contaminated groundwater aquifer. Remediation efficency was evaluated by comparing 3 inflow monitoring wells to 3 outflow wells (east, middle, west) over ~ 1 year so far. Inflow PFAS concentrations ranged, on average from~ 40 – 90 μg/L. Apart fromminor hydrogeological disturbances, a PFAS reduction efficency of ~ 95% could be achieved, starting from ~ 10.000 ng/L down to ~ 100 ng/L.

Application Example:
Stockholm international airport

At a former military airport in Germany, Intraplex® colloidal carbon was injected into a PFAS contaminated aquifer. Immediately after injection, downstream PFAS concentrations decreased from ~1.200 ng/L to < 100 ng/L. The adsorption barrier lifetime is expected to be in the range of several decade.

PFAS adsorption capacity

Intrapore’s specialized activated carbon for PFAS adsorption shows a vastly, and significantly higher capacity for PFOS compared to a other products.

The maximum load of Intraplex B is about 100 mg PFOS per 1 g activated carbon. The compared product has a loading of only 23 mg PFOS per 1 g activated carbon (see top Fig.).

Similarly, the adsorption coefficient, which is a measure of the quality of the adsorption, is 5 times higher with Intraplex B (see bottom Fig.).

This implies that to ensure a barrier lifetime of 10 years for PFOS, 5 times less Intraplex carbon is needed.

For less adsorbing substances like PFBA, this advantage of Intraplex B is assumed to be even more substantial and can be in the range of up to 2 – 3 orders of magnitude.

    With TrapOx®, combined adsorption and reaction zones can be created in which especially persistent pollutants can be enriched and degraded on a successive basis.

    The preferred areas of application include effluent plumes of persistent organic pollutants such as phenols, large PAH molecules, halogenated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane and chlorobenzene, or MTBE.
